The initial scenes in meeting the parents were very awkward and tense at times. I'm a huge fan of both the actress and actor who plays the parents. Their previous work are excellent, so in regards to their performances, they were terrific. You felt something was going to come out of it and you were going to be hit with a plot twist or evolution of the story, but instead we are greeted with what was a confusing and pointless mess of a film that literally went nowhere. Any reviewer who tries to claim they are more "intelligent " because they "got it" are talking complete rubbish. Nobody gets this film because it literally makes no sense whatsoever. I'm one for psychological thrillers and will give any film with meaning and substance the time of day, but I just don't get how anyone can understand or get satisfied with any aspect of this movie. It felt like a David Lynch rip off, expect at least David Lynch's weirdness has some sort of substance in his work. What was this film about? Was it a musical ? A horror ? A drama ? Honestly haven't got a clue. A complete waste of 2.5 hours and one of the weirdest films I have ever seen and certainly not in a good way. Avoid at all costs. Something massively wrong in the movie industry if this gets awards.

When my friend and I watched Hereditary we accidentally paused it right at the shot in 9:20, where Annie is seen on the ceiling. What if it's not a representation of self-doubt or self-destructiveness but more literal memory of attempting to kidnap a girl, kill her partner and clean up the mess? As he's had intimacy issues as shown with his mother who he shys away from any affection, maybe this nervousness and awkwardness translates into resenting affection which results in contempt and misogyny and unsuspecting violence? The scenes with the high school girls can be interpreted as this: him staring at the girl performing on stage and her look of concern/alarm back at him because it's creepy (Like him 'creepily staring' at the imaginary Lucy. could she represent an obsession that went too far? The smell of varnish at the icecream shop which the high school girl representation of himself said 'you should know it's not varnish' very nervously, could be the smell of chemicals used to clean up after disposing of a body at the back of the shop where it happened? Again points to the high school girl who worked there who he had the obsession with (because he had mentioned he sees the kids who performed in the high school production of Oklahoma years later working around town. I also notice a comment about how in the book Jake was varnishing floors all night without proper protection which degraded his mental and physical side, maybe the memory of the crime is so hazy he doesn't know if it really happened. He debates internally via Lucy whether his mother is to blame for his dysfunctions or if one must just take responsibility for their own actions. Maybe he's not just trying to work out his own personality/actions, but more specifically trying to figure out why he perpetrated the crime? It's not a solid theory at all but interesting to re-interpet because it changes his dying moments from either succumbing to dementia or hypothermia to killing himself because he feels further ostracised by the guilt of this crime. Maybe I've just watched too many True Crime documentaries 😂.
